The IMSA Series offers motorsport in its purest form and – thanks to the passionate fans – a unique atmosphere. It continues a long history of sports car racing in the USA and Canada – a history, in which BMW has always played a major role. Over 30 GT cars go head to head at iconic racetracks. BMW takes on strong opposition from manufacturers such as Corvette, Ford, Porsche and Ferrari. However, it is not only the many big-name manufacturers that make this series so special. The calendar features one classic after another, including the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and the “Petit Le Mans”. Since 2018, BMW has been taking on the opposition armed with the BMW M8 GTE.

The BMW M8 GTE is the first BMW Motorsport race car to see action before its production counterpart. The GT sports car took part in its first race back in January, at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The BMW 8 Series Coupé’s big moment will come at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which takes place in June. It is here that the new BMW sports car for the luxury sector will be unveiled – an event that also represents a highlight within MISSION8 for BMW and BMW Motorsport. BMW Motorsport will accompany the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the unveiling of the BMW 8 Series Coupé with a magazine special and a dedicated online offering.

THE BMW M8 GTE.

The BMW M8 GTE was the first BMW Motorsport race car to be in action before its series counterpart. The GT sports car contested its first race at the 24 Hours of Daytona in January 2018. Working closely with their colleagues at BMW M GmbH, the BMW Motorsport engineers opted to use the BMW S63T4 as the base engine for the BMW M8 GTE; this is a V8 engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology, which was first used in the new BMW M5. The new BMW M8 GTE will compete in some sprint races, but primarily in endurance races around the world.

RACING IN AMERICA.

The commitment in North America remains a central pillar of the BMW Motorsport racing programme in 2019. The partnership with BMW Team RLL entered its eleventh year. The BMW M8 GTE can look forward to once again competing in genuine classics in North America. BMW Team RLL kicks off proceedings at the end of January with the 24 Hours of Daytona, at which BMW Brand Ambassador and works driver Alessandro Zanardi will be among the squad of drivers. As well as BMW Team RLL in the GTLM class, Turner Motorsport also was in action. The team ran the BMW M6 GT3 in the GTD class.

Accumulated experience.

It was back in 2009 that the cooperation began between BMW Motorsport and Bobby Rahal – one of the most successful names in North American motorsport. However, Rahal does not run the team by himself. The acronym RLL stands for the three owners: Rahal, TV presenter David Letterman, and businessman Mike Lanigan. The team is based in Ohio. It is from there that operations are coordinated between BMW of North America and BMW Motorsport.
