Armed with the BMW M4 DTM, BMW goes head to head with its direct competition in the premium automobile sector in the pinnacle of touring car racing. And with great success: Since BMW returned to the DTM in 2012, no fewer than eight titles have gone to Munich. However, BMW’s success story in the DTM is much longer than that, and stretches right back to the very first race – in 1984 in Zolder. Harald Grohs crossed the finish line first at the wheel of a BMW 635 CSi – followed by a further three BMW drivers to make it a top-four shut-out for BMW. Volker Strycek, also in a BMW 635 CSi, was crowned champion driver in that inaugural season. Eric van de Poele (1987) and Roberto Ravaglia (1989) had achieved the same feat by the time BMW withdrew its works team in 1992. The success story has continued since 2012.

BMW Team RMG also picked up the Teams’ title in 2014, while BMW won the Manufacturers’ Championship in 2015. In 2017, the new BMW M4 DTM is set to make its debut. In 2017, the next generation of BMW M4 DTM made its debut. Ahead of the 2018 season, the BMW M4 DTM has been upgraded, particularly with regard to aerodynamics, and has been modified in line with regulations. The changes reduced the downforce of the car by about a third. The result: There is an even greater focus on the drivers in 2018.

DTM Geschichte

BMW IN THE DTM.

A tradition of success.

BMW has traditionally enjoyed great success in the DTM: The first race in the history of the DTM, on 11th March in Zolder, ended with a top-four shut-out for BMW. Come the end of that inaugural season, it was Volkser Strycek who won the first Drivers’ Championship in a BMW 635 CSi. Eric van de Poele (1987) and Roberto Ravaglia (1989) repeated this feat before BMW withdrew as a works team in 1992. Upon its return to the series, BMW seamlessly continued the success story: Bruno Spengler won the Drivers’ Championship in 2012, with BMW Team Schnitzer picking up the Team title and BMW taking the Manufacturers’ title back to Munich.
