There is no doubting the talents of the six BMW DTM drivers on the circuit. But what hidden talents do Marco Wittmann & co. display off the track? Get to know a whole new side to these drivers. “First of all, you have to check the size of the gaps. It is important to get the correct distance to the door, bonnet and, eventually, to the headlights and bumper. If everything is okay, you put the first screw in on the side of the door. You then take all the distances to the bonnet, headlights and bumper from that. Next, you conserve the fender cavity, to prevent any build-up of rust there. Once everything is in place and looking good, you complete the car. By that I mean: you insert the wheel housing liner and reassemble the bumper, as this is usually removed to replace the fender. Once you’ve done that, everything should be perfect.”
Because he is a trained coachbuilder and still regularly helps out at his parents’ business.
To be successful and conquer the world, you must know where your roots are – where home is. Marco knows this, and it gives him the support he needs to keep a cool head and win out on the track. Motorsport is his life, victories are his goal.
“To start with, a good steak should come from a bull, not a cow. Also, you have to cut the meat in a special way: at a 90-degree angle to the grain. You should use coarse and very dry sea salt. It has to spark when you throw it on a fire. Then the meat is dry enough.”
Because his family owns a large chain of restaurants in Brazil. Their speciality: grilled delicacies.
His family and his faith are the two most important things in Augusto’s life. Both give him the strength to achieve anything he puts his mind to. He does everything in his power to win and be successful. But Augusto wants more than that. He wants to give something back to the people. That is what he is all about.
“Gravity pins are used in scaffolding. They are located on an assembly frame. These frames are two metres high. You fit them together to reach the desired height. Then you add a guard rail to prevent anyone from falling. This is where the gravity pin comes into play. You have to bring it into a horizontal position, then you can attach the guard rail. The gravity pin goes down – and the rail is firmly fixed in place.”
Because he trained as a scaffolder and learned his trade at dizzy heights
Timo has seen everything in motorsport, and has a wealth of experience. He knows exactly which path he wants to take – and nothing will stop him from taking it. He speaks his mind, even if it is not always what everyone wants to hear. Timo always remains true to himself.
“The Haka is all about intimidating your opponents. It is like a war dance – you look angry, shout and stamp your feet. You have to show all your emotion and passion – with all that gesticulating and expression.”
Because he spent much of his childhood in New Zealand – the home of the Haka.
Racing is Tom’s world. After all, he and motorsport have a lot in common: they are both international, cosmopolitan, fast, and always on the move. As such, Tom does not really care where he is racing and competing for first place – as long as he ends up on the podium and has gained more experience in the process.
“A perfect drive is a combination of power, relaxation and concentration. If you put too much power into it, it doesn't go well. But it’s also not good to be too relaxed. And it is massively important to maintain concentration. You have to find the right combination of these three factors. That makes golf good training for me and the perfect counterbalance to motor racing.”
Because golf is one of his great passions, alongside motorsport. He currently has a 4.5 handicap.

“You have to be well prepared: the nappy must already be in position, and the wipes, powder and absolutely everything else has to be at hand. Then you can treat it like a pit stop – only, instead of a tyre change it’s a nappy change. You put the baby on the changing table with a mat on it so that the baby is comfortable. Then you just need to get stuck in and get it done as quickly as possible.”
Because he became the father of a little boy called Felix in September 2016.
It is never too late to start doing something you love. Take Maxime, for example, who did not start out in motorsport until he was 18 years old. Since then, he has taken one step after another towards the pinnacle of the sport. He is a thoroughbred racer and is continuing his family’s tradition of racing drivers.
