The portfolio in the BMW M Motorsport programme is gaining a new top-of-the-range model, in the form of the BMW M4 GT3. The new GT3 car will succeed the BMW M6 GT3. As of the 2022 season, private drivers and teams from all over the world will have the opportunity to challenge for victories and titles in the top car in the M Motorsport range, which is based on the next generation of BMW M4. The biggest improvements compared to its predecessor, the BMW M6 GT3, are in three areas: driveability, cost efficiency and operation. The BMW M4 GT3’s handling and cockpit equipment are more comfortable for amateur drivers, while the car is easier on the tyres and offers greater consistency. Far lower lifecycle costs and longer maintenance intervals for the engine and transmission are vital economic factors. The new BMW M4 Competition provides the perfect basis for the new top model from BMW M Motorsport (fuel consumption (combined): 10.2 – 9.9 l/100 km acc. WLTP, 10.2 l/100 km acc. NEDC; combined CO2 emissions: 233 – 227 g/km acc. WLTP, 234 g/km acc. NEDC), whose engine was designed from the outset for use at the racetrack. This underlines how road car and race car development always go hand in hand at BMW M GmbH.

THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BMW M4 GT3.

BMW M4 GT3
M4 GT3 engine

ENGINE.

The straight-six cylinder engine is around 40 kilos lighter than the V8 engine in the BMW M6 GT3, providing reduced driving weight and improved weight distribution. Compared to the S58 engine in the BMW M4 Competition, it has been optimized in the following areas: angle of installation, dry sump, engine-mounted oil tank with integrated oil-water exchanger, intake system with gas exchange split and two butterflies, exhaust system with gas exchange split, engine mount and fixing adjusted for GT3, torsional vibration dampers at the rear.

BMW M4 GT3 Tyres

TYRES.

Tyre types from various manufacturers were tested for the BMW M4 GT3 to ensure optimal preparation for the conditions in different racing series.

BMW M4 GT3 Steering wheel

STEERING WHEEL.

Adjustment and activation of essential settings for driver in race mode, e.g. traction control, radio, ABS, engine mapping, windscreen wipers, drink system. Produced in cooperation with FANATEC for use in both real car and race simulator.

BMW M4 GT3 Clutch

CLUTCH.

Electro-hydraulic, thus lower wear, operated via paddles on steering wheel, no need for clutch pedal, stall prevention, partially-automated start up possible.

BMW M TRACK COCKPIT.

Allows many basic configurations of the systems in the car without connecting a laptop or special software, e.g. preselection of charging pressure graph, selection of series-specific functions, adjustment of pit speed, selection of fuel type, system diagnosis, sensor calibration.

TRANSMISSION.

Trans-axle design, sequential, straight-toothed 6-speed gearbox, further development of the gearbox in the BMW M8 GTE with improvements regarding increased runtime, cost efficiency and performance.

MILESTONES FOR THE NEW GT FLAGSHIP.

Since the start of 2020, the BMW M4 GT3 has undergone many stages of development. This began virtually with CAD and CFD simulations, and continued with the use of an engine on the test bench, the assembly of the test chassis and work in the wind tunnel. One milestone was the roll-out on 18th July 2020. This was followed by many tests at various racetracks, at which many BMW works drivers made valuable contributions. In December 2020, at the BMW SIM Live Event, Philipp Eng demonstrated the steering wheel for the BMW M4 GT3, which was developed together with FANATEC. It is the first steering wheel in the world that can be used in both a real race car and a simulator without modifications.

In 2021, the test work continued in Monteblanco, Almeria and on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The car currently has more than 14,000 test kilometres under its belt – that is the equivalent of more than 70 hours of track time. Throughout this phase, the BMW M Motorsport engineers worked hard to improve the driveability and reliability of the car on its way to being race-ready. The goal: to significantly reduce lifecycle costs and maintenance expenditure compared to its predecessor. Following the launch and race debut in June, the BMW M4 GT3 will undergo more tests and race outings before it is delivered to the first customers, who will compete with the car all over the world in 2022.

*Official data on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For more information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures, see www.bmw.de/wltp.
